"We're full of ourselves"

Matsuda Genta-san always brings up how he wants to be on this serialisation during ViVi interviews. What are your feelings today, having met for the first time?

Genta: Ah ~ I was really nervous. When I’m alone I get anxious so I wanted my manager to stay close to me but he seems to have gone somewhere else once we reached the studio (laughs). I’m really nervous, and this isn’t an exaggeration, but this is the job I’m the happiest about!
When I first heard I would get to work with kemio-kun, I immediately called my parents. My parents were happy for me, saying that my dream came true! Everyone in my family loves kemio-kun.

kemio: Eh-! That’s an honour. To say such things about me. You must be really close to your family since you immediately told them about your work. That’s filial ~

Genta: I knew kemio-kun since he was on Vine, but I was still in elementary school so I didn’t have a mobile phone. I started watching YouTube in my last year of middle school, and started to really know more about kemio-kun. It’s one-sided on my part, but I really love the passionate way you live!

kemio: You’re speaking about me in such a grand way ~ I’m not that grand. I went to America about 6 years ago, you were only in middle school? Oh my. Were you already in the agency?

Genta: I was already in Johnny’s then. I joined when I was about 11. I want to copy everything about kemio-kun, like the way you keep talking, I think you’re really cool!

kemio: You sound like you’re reviewing a movie ~ I’m really happy ~ A bright, friendly aura surrounds Genta-kun. Let’s have fun today! I’m excited too ~

# kemigen’s First ‘What’s up’?

I knew you before we met!

kemio: Genta-kun’s supporters leave lots of comments on my social media accounts, so I asked SixTONES’ Matsumura Hokuto-kun (the first guest on this serialisation), “What kind of person is Matsuda Genta-san?” Hokuto-kun replied, “Genta is energetic.”

Genta: You asked him about me? Honestly, I was disappointed when the first guest turned out to be Hokuto-kun. Even though he’s my senior I went to him and asked, “Why is it Hokuto!” (laughs) I was told that I was noisy. Hokuto-kun is cool (laughs).

I read “Uchira kanoke made eien no runway” 50 times.

Genta: I usually don’t read books, but I read kemio-kun’s book 50 times. It was full of words that touched my heart. “The shortcut to your dreams isn’t talent, but to say it aloud” or “Anxiety is a necessary accessory. It’ll never come off”, and about how you went to America despite feeling worried, it always encourages me!

kemio: When Traja was on the cover of ViVi, I heard that you held my book. Genta-kun’s supporters also tell me that they read my book after being influenced by you. Thank you so much, I’m really happy namida.

Nice body! No no, no body!

Genta: To prepare for this interview, I went to the salon five times in one week! I had the best treatment done! Before this I had permed my hair and bleached it so my hair was damaged. I really wanted to fix it up for this interview! I also went on a diet!

kemio: Eh~ you don’t have to do such things~ You have a nice body!

Genta: No no, no body! I gave it my all for today. kemio-kun’s cross-fit is also showing results!

kemio: I’m not done yet! It’s a work in progress!

Genta-kun is a “sponge ©”

kemio: He’s clear about what he likes and what he wants to do, and he learns very quickly! He’s someone who is able to absorb new things and make them his own. That’s why he’s like a sponge-chan. Please make sure to add a © behind. He doesn’t give up, but is flexible and continues challenging himself!

kemio-kun is my “Top of the goddess”

Genta: He’s the person I respect the most. Of course there are my seniors in Johnny’s too, but honestly, he’s number 1. He made me realise so many things in life, I’m just so grateful.

kemio x Genta crosstalk:

Challenging new things would make one feel uneasy, but being overconfident and going for it anyway would result in learning new things. What are some new findings you’ve had from such “overconfident” moments?

kemio: When I speak English, I tend to use slang and come across strongly. I think it’s because I had the image that in America, you won’t survive if you’re soft. If I think “Huh?”, I’ll immediately talk back. In Japanese, when you speak about things indirectly, there’s a phrase like “sugarcoating” isn’t there. But in English, it feels like it’s either black or white. That’s why I’m able to say things in a straightforward manner. The culture changes my personality, and this side of me is only visible because I have the experience of living in America.

Genta: It’s amazing that you can have arguments in English. You often argue with your roommate Miles-san too right?

kemio: I really argue with Miles every day! There are parts of each other we’re unhappy about, and we bring those up in our clashes. I’ve known him for about 3-4 years. We’ve been living together for 2 years now so we’ve already passed the most difficult part. We’ve both learnt to apologise. Miles is more of an adult than I am.

Genta: Thinking back, there really were moments when I was full of myself. The more experienced I get, the more humble I get as well. When I was still in elementary or middle school, I’d tell the choreographers or staff-san during concert rehearsals that I wanted to change the staging, or that I wanted to perform in a particular costume in a particular lighting. I said whatever came to my mind. Of course, I was only saying what I felt would make the concert better but now I wouldn’t say that much. As I grew, I started to realise how amazing the people who worked with me were and I started to trust them more too. When it comes to making something together, I will state my opinions properly, but also respect the people around me.

You should talk about your dreams and people you want to meet. If you say it, it’ll come true instantly!

Genta: For me, I’ve learnt from kemio-kun that I should say my dreams aloud, and that would help in them coming true. For example, this interview. I talked about wanting to do it to various people, until I was pretty much annoying. But this was the result of me telling everyone “I want to be in kemio-kun’s serialisation!”

kemio: I read Traja’s ViVi issue~! These 1 - 2 years, you’ve been talking about how you’ve been a fan for a long time, I was surprised ~

Genta: I’m an old fan! (laughs) kemio-kun also talks about the things you want to do and the people you want to meet, right?

kemio: I always say it! In fact, last year I got to be on the cover of ViVi with Mizuhara Kiko-san, who I admire very much. It was a dream I had always spoken about too. It almost can be said that I grew up watching Kiko-chan, so I was really happy when that dream came true. Also, the commercial for 109! Every time I walk by the 109 billboard, I’d say “I want to be on it~” (laughs). I’d say it nonchalantly during greetings, and after meeting various people, my dream came true and my face was on the 109 billboard. You never know who is listening, so everyone please do say your dreams aloud too! 1, 2, 3!

The power of words is amazing! The voices of your supporters have reached me too!

kemio: Genta-kun’s fans always report to me whenever he starts something new. I had never met him before, but I was updated about him. I felt that he was really loved by many people, and their passion was amazing, almost like they could generate electricity (laughs). I mean, once Genta-kun’s supporters get serious, they could get him to be trending at no. 1 on Twitter! Wouldn’t they be happy about today’s interview too?

Genta: They would be drenched!

kemio: That’s a great way of describing it ~ (laughs) But that’s the truth, they would be drenched from their perspiration, they might even faint. I’ll leave the announcement to Genta-kun (laughs).

When I feel lonely, I’ll watch kemio-kun’s videos

Genta: I like it when I’m alone at home, drinking, and thinking about things. I can reset my brain then too. I think about what I didn’t do well, write it on paper, and decide on how to improve! I get overwhelmed with such thoughts sometimes, and start to feel really really lonely. During such times, I’ll watch kemio-kun’s YouTube videos and feel better.

kemio: I’m happy if my videos help, even if it’s just a little! Genta-kun has times he feels lonely too huh! During Valentine’s, my American friends were uploading Instagram stories with messages for their loved ones and it made me think. “Is it ok that I don’t have such experiences?”, and I felt lonely too. I wrote those feelings down, mixed in English and Japanese like song lyrics, and sent them to (Maruyama) Rei-chan.

# kemigen’s from now on

I’d like to release beauty products!

kemio: I’d like to make and sell products that people can use in their daily lives. My skin flares up, so I use concealer - items like these, or skincare too. I’d like to release beauty products!

I’d like to create merchandise with kemio-kun!

kemio: Of the merchandise that Genta-kun has, I like the hanger! That’s really a great idea. I want to make one too. Matsuda Genta-kun’s face and upper body is printed on the hanger, and when you put clothes on it, it looks like Genta-kun is wearing it. That hanger is official, right?

Genta: That hanger is official (laughs). I want to make a penlight with kemio-kun!! With an original and cute design. Wouldn’t that be exciting at lives?

kemio: Eh ~ is that ok? For me to piggyback on your goods~ (laughs)

I want to spread my wings and go global...
You definitely can do it, I did it too!

Genta: kemio-kun is living overseas, isn’t the world big? That’s why I’d like to hear various stories, learn about new perspectives and become bigger as a person. Actually, I’d like to try living in America too!

kemio: Eh~ is that so?

Genta: I thought it about it when I just joined Johnny’s. Going to an American school, learning English, making lots of friends and learning about lots of new cultures. Travis Japan is aiming globally too. That’s why I’d like to be able to live independently overseas, so that I can say that goal proudly.

kemio: I think there would be no problems at all for Genta-kun! I mean, I could do it too. I really didn’t know my left from my right, and I couldn’t speak English at all, I just clutched $1000 in my hands and went for it. And it worked out. I can feel the ambition and drive from Genta-kun, so you’ll definitely be able to do it!

Genta: It would be the best if I could hang out with kemio-kun in New York.

kemio: Please do come over and hang out at my place~!

Genta: Somehow, I’ve gained confidence. From those words, I’m gained courage. It’s just ... (gets emotional)

kemio: If you’re ok with me, just ask me anything! I’m not so great a person as to give advice, but in life, what will be, will be!
