Sensual Element - Matsuda Genta
When we told Matsuda Genta-san about the theme for the photoshoot again, he tilted his head and went “Sensual... Sensual...?” After explaining the word to him, he replied “Ah, that’s erotic.” His bright and innocent smile was completely different from the wild and sexy side he had just showed us in front of the camera.
“I don’t know much about sensuality but for me, coolness and sex appeal is a part of living. Like Ozaki Yutaka-san. When you watch his live performances, his singing and expressions are really sexy. It might also be because of the lyrics, but when he’s on stage he expresses manliness as a lifestyle. There’s also the coolness of him continuing to be himself...”
In Travis Japan, he also goes by “Sexy Tiger”. When asked about it, he answers cheekily, “I don’t think there’s anyone else but me for this role (laughs)”
“The members and fans describe me that way, and that’s how I want to be too. Although I’m the youngest in Travis Japan, I don’t want to show cuteness or things like that. I want to show manliness. Sex appeal that’s wild, but still classy.”
That side of him is apparent in his performances. Both fast and slow dances, his emotional expressions that bring you into the world of each song. He’s exactly someone who shows a gap.
“In my performances, I want the audience to feel like a breeze is softly blowing by them... I say that but I care a lot about how the audience is looking at me (laughs). I want to bring them into the world of each song, so I sing without meeting their gazes except in certain points of the song“
It seems like he watches dance videos from all over the world as reference.
“They’re not famous, but while they look like they’re just doing a weird pose, it looks good. They also tell a story with their expressions and movements. There are various types. I watch lots of them to find dance styles that suit Travis Japan, and myself.”
The feelings you get from lives and plays can also be described as sensual.
“For me personally, and also all of Travis Japan, we stand on stage and think from an outsider’s perspective about what the audience should feel from our dance, and how we are being seen on stage. However, what’s most important is a person’s character. We got to collaborate with Austin Mahone-san and MIYAVI-san. Although they’re stars and we’re just starting out, they treated us as though we were the same level as them and were big-hearted enough to accept us for who we were. Rather than character, it means that they’re warm here!”
He hit his chest as he said it. That purity is probably his most powerful weapon.
